Most car advice is written as though everyone has the same day. Choosing well is really about being honest about your life: where you park, who you carry, how far you drive, and what you would rather never have to think about again.
Work out the real monthly cost, not the sticker price
The instalment is only part of it. Insurance, fuel, tyres, services and licensing all land in the same month as everything else. A cheaper car with thirsty fuel consumption and expensive parts can cost more each month than a slightly pricier one that sips.
Ask for the total monthly figure with everything included before you fall in love with anything.
Safety features worth insisting on
ABS brakes and at least two airbags should be non-negotiable. Beyond that, ISOFIX child seat anchors matter enormously if you carry little ones, and a reverse camera earns its keep the first time you park in a tight centre at night.
Central locking that engages automatically as you pull away is a small feature that many women rate highly.
Think about where you actually park
A large SUV is wonderful until your complex parking bay is narrow and pillared. Take the car you are considering to your own parking spot before deciding, not just around the dealership block.
Ask what a service costs, not just when it is due
Service intervals tell you how often. They do not tell you how much. Two cars with the same interval can differ substantially per service. If a plan is included, ask exactly what it covers and what it does not.
Boot space beats horsepower for most of us
Prams, school bags, gym kit, month-end shopping. Open the boot, put your actual life in it, and see. Nobody has ever regretted a boot that was slightly too big.
