How to improve your credit score in South Africa

21 July 20265 min read

Your score is not a life sentence. Here is what actually moves it, what does nothing, and how long each change takes to show.

A credit score feels like a verdict on who you are. It is not. It is a summary of how you have handled credit recently, and recently is the important word. Almost everything on it can be improved with a few months of consistent habits.

Check what is actually on your record first

You are entitled to one free credit report a year from each registered bureau in South Africa, including TransUnion, Experian and Compuscan. Get it before you assume the worst. Errors are common: accounts you closed years ago still showing open, a judgment already paid, or an account that is not yours at all.

If something is wrong, dispute it in writing with the bureau. They must investigate. People are often surprised how much a single incorrect listing was costing them.

Pay on time, every time, even the small ones

Payment history is the single heaviest factor. A missed R200 clothing account hurts more than most people expect, because the system records the miss, not the amount. Set debit orders for the day after payday so nothing depends on you remembering.

If you know a payment is going to be late, phone the provider before the due date. An arrangement is treated very differently from silence.

Keep your balances well below your limits

Using most of your available credit signals strain, even when you pay in full. A good target is to stay under half of each limit. Paying a card down before the statement date, rather than after, is often what changes the number the bureau sees.

Do not close your oldest account

Length of history counts in your favour. That old account you never use is quietly helping you. Keep it open and put one small recurring payment through it.

Give it time, and be realistic

Most positive changes show within three to six months. Serious events take longer to fade. That is frustrating, but it also means the work you start today shows up sooner than you think.

And if you need a car while you are still rebuilding, that is exactly why DriveDiva looks at your affordability today rather than only at your history.
